I hadn’t run my letter frequency analyzer on all Popmundo names in a while now, which I do from time to time in order to find those odd (or just plain broken and illegal) names.

Special letters usually stick out like a sore thumb when you break down every name into separate letters and count each how many times they appear. For a human, doing this type of counting by hand would be insane.

Popmundo Namesearch database was updated tonight. Also, for the first time ever (I think), I’m now publishing a graph showing the number of characters in Popmundo over time. Data goes back as far as 2004 and reaches until today, October 26, 2009.
I gathered the datapoints using the Web Archive and my own collected data over the time I’ve been playing Popo. You have to excuse how the this looks, I have more data points for 2009, so half of the graph is 2009, the first half is for multiple years! The x-axis is not in proper scale.

Something happened in March. Game peaked at around 410,000  and there has been a steady decline since then. What could it be? Was it because of the shorter inactivity period introduced into the game back then (no logon after 70 days = death), or has there been a more active culling of clones? Or people got bored…?

It’s not for me to speculate, I only tell facts!

Are you expecting a baby in Popmundo (or just otherwise?). And can’t decide on a name until you know if it’s a boy or a girl?

Well then, the solution is to use a unisex name! A name that exists both for girls and boys. I made the extra effort to check all the namelists in Popmundo and built a list of names that exist for both genders and counted how many times it’s used in the game.

Here’s a complete list of all the 601 unisex names available in Popmundo (The times field tells how many alive characters in the game currently have this name).

(It took me over 4 minutes to run this on a fairly old computer due to the repeated iterations in the subquery.)

I’m quite certain many of the names here should not be allowed to given to both genders. For example Aphrodite and José sound very misplaced, but after asking around from native speakers, I’ve learned they’re actually correct. It’s interesting to note, that by running one kind of analysis on a database, unexpected results can help to pinpoint errors that otherwise would be quite impossible to do manually. How else would we have found out that there’s a José in the dutch girls’ name list?

I’ll have some translators look into this list so they pick out names that are definitely out of place. Don’t be surprised if this list will change one day!
